Trading Forex with a ZAR Account

Why the currency of your trading account matters, and what it means to deposit and withdraw in South African rand.

ZAR deposits β€” South African rand forex accounts

ZAR account vs USD account β€” what's the difference?

When you open a forex trading account, you choose a base currency. Most international brokers default to USD, EUR, or GBP. If your account is in USD and you fund it from a South African bank account, your bank converts your rand to dollars at the prevailing rate and typically charges a conversion fee of 1–3%.

ZAR Account

Deposit and withdraw in rand. No currency conversion step. Your balance and P&L are displayed in ZAR. Risk calculations are straightforward β€” R1,000 at risk means R1,000.

USD Account (funded from ZAR)

Your bank converts rand to USD on deposit and back on withdrawal. Conversion fees apply both ways. Your balance is in USD, requiring mental arithmetic to understand rand exposure.

How to deposit in ZAR with FxPro

FxPro accepts ZAR deposits from South African clients through bank wire transfer (EFT) and debit/credit card (Visa and Mastercard). The steps are:

  1. Open an account on the FSCA-regulated FxPro entity and complete KYC verification (proof of ID and proof of address).
  2. Select ZAR as your account currency during the account opening process.
  3. Log into the FxPro client portal and navigate to the deposit section.
  4. Choose your payment method and enter the amount in rand.
  5. For bank transfers, use the banking details provided by FxPro and use your account number as the payment reference.

Exchange Control (SARB regulations)

South African residents are subject to SARB exchange control regulations. Under the Single Discretionary Allowance, individuals may transfer up to R2,000,000 per calendar year offshore without tax clearance (SDA doubled in the 2026 National Budget, effective April 8, 2026). Transfers above this amount require a tax clearance certificate. Forex trading with an FSCA-regulated broker using a ZAR account may have different implications β€” consult a tax adviser for your specific situation.

Why ZAR accounts matter for risk management

When your account is in rand, the pip values shown in our calculator match your actual account in real time. If the Pip Value Calculator shows R10.24 per pip on USD/ZAR, that is exactly what moves in your account per pip β€” no conversion required.

With a USD account, the rand value of each pip changes with the USD/ZAR rate throughout the day. This makes risk management more complicated because your "R1,000 stop-loss" is actually a moving target denominated in a foreign currency.

Withdrawing in ZAR

Withdrawals from a ZAR account return funds in rand to the same payment method used for the deposit (card withdrawals typically return to the card used; bank transfers to your registered bank account). FxPro processes withdrawal requests within one business day; the time to receive funds in your South African bank account depends on your bank's processing time, typically 1–3 business days for EFT.
