USD/ZAR Pip Value & Position Sizing

USD/ZAR is the ideal pair for learning position sizing with a ZAR account: the pip value is fixed at R10.00 per standard lot, regardless of the current exchange rate. Because ZAR is both the quote currency and your account currency, no conversion is required. This makes the lot size formula clean and predictable.

Position Sizing Example

R50,000 account, 1% risk = R500 at risk. Stop-loss: 40 pips.

Lots = R500 Γ· (40 Γ— R10.00) = 1.25 standard lots

Because the pip value is fixed, you can calculate position size mentally. A R500 risk on a 40-pip stop always gives 1.25 lots on USD/ZAR β€” no rate lookup needed. If your stop widens to 50 pips (as recommended during volatile sessions), reduce to 1.00 lot to keep risk constant.

Typical daily ATR: 200–500 pips. Recommended stop range: 30–60 pips for intraday trades, 80–150 pips for swing positions.

About USD/ZAR

USD/ZAR is South Africa's primary forex benchmark β€” the single most-watched EM pair for domestic traders. Key drivers: US Federal Reserve decisions (dominant factor), SARB repo rate (6Γ— per year), SA gold and platinum export revenues, global risk sentiment (ZAR weakens sharply in risk-off), and domestic political developments including budget votes and Eskom news. Spreads are typically 5–10 pips with major brokers.

Best trading hours (SAST): London-NY overlap 14:00–18:00 offers tightest spreads and highest liquidity. Avoid Asian session (00:00–09:00 SAST) where spreads can widen 3–5Γ—. US NFP (first Friday of month, 15:30 SAST) typically triggers 300–800 pip moves.
