AUD/ZAR Pip Value & Position Sizing

AUD/ZAR pip value scales with the exchange rate. At a typical rate of 12.00, one standard lot carries a pip value of approximately R12.00/pip. Liquidity is moderate β€” lower than EUR/ZAR but better than NZD/ZAR β€” with typical spreads of 20–30 pips from major brokers. Both Australia and South Africa are major commodity exporters, creating a commodity-on-commodity dynamic that produces strong trend periods.

Position Sizing Example

R50,000 account, 1% risk = R500 at risk. Stop-loss: 50 pips. AUD/ZAR rate: 12.00.

AUD/ZAR often trends strongly during commodity cycles β€” wider stops of 60–100 pips can capture larger moves while maintaining risk discipline. Reduce stop size (and increase lot size proportionally) during Asian session when spreads narrow. A 25-pip spread on a 0.83-lot position costs R9.90 on entry.

Typical daily ATR: 150–350 pips. Recommended stop range: 40–70 pips intraday, 100–180 pips swing.

About AUD/ZAR

AUD/ZAR is unique in that both currencies are heavily commodity-linked: AUD correlates with iron ore, copper, and LNG prices (Australia's top exports); ZAR correlates with gold, platinum, and coal (SA's top exports). When commodity prices broadly rise, both currencies strengthen and AUD/ZAR can stay flat or trend slowly. When commodity prices fall, the pair drops sharply as ZAR typically underperforms AUD in risk-off. Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) decisions (first Tuesday of the month, 05:30 SAST) are the primary AUD driver. China GDP and PMI data also move AUD significantly due to Australia's commodity export dependency on China.

Best trading hours (SAST): Asian session 02:00–10:00 for AUD liquidity; London session 09:00–17:00 for ZAR liquidity. The 09:00–10:00 SAST window combines both, often offering the best bid/ask spreads for AUD/ZAR. The pair is thin overnight in SA time (19:00–01:00 SAST).
